I joined the forum a couple of months ago when I was given a turtle. My co-worker brought it into my classroom and handed it to me. She basically said, "Here's a turtle for your class. I've had it in my living room all summer and I can't get it to eat. Now it's eyes are swollen shut. I hope you can make it better."

I joined because I knew nothing about turtles and this thing desperately needed some help. Thanks to y'all, I think it's thriving.

The turtle was a purported male and named Frito by the woman's children. Later I was told by another dubious source that the turtle was a female. In the event that it is a female, I've renamed it Frida Kahlo--because she's beautiful like that!

Anyway, I'm a career education teacher at a specialized school that serves students with visual and other impairments. I wrote and received a grant (from Federal stimulus funds) to teach animal care to my students. I have a classroom full of caged animals including the turtle; hermit crabs; parakeets, Guinea pigs; a chinchilla; a rabbit; a gerbil; an aquarium and a hamster. Within the next few weeks, I will be getting a snake or lizard. I also have a kennel to house dogs and cats; a commercial grooming table and a commercial bathtub. In the future I will expand to grooming and pet sitting dogs and cats. On the lower academic range, I teach students how to interact with animals while maintaining safety for the pet and the child. On the higher end, I have curriculum for teaching pet sitting, dog grooming, veterinary technician, kennel technician; pet store worker; and/or animal shelter volunteer and any other related field.

On the personal side I'm married to aerospace engineer and we live on acreage just outside of Austin. We have a horse, two dogs, a cat and a 65 year old Amazon parrot. We also grow olive trees. My interests include hiking, camping, horseback riding, reading, Braille, sign language, dark beer, and a host of other things.

That's a great introduction! I'm glad you've found the help you were looking for. It sounds like you have a wonderful classroom and home. That parrot already seems fascinating, could you tell us more about him/her?

Thanks Steve!

The parrot is a male and was caught in the wild sometime prior to 1956. I know this because the import station where he was quarantined was closed in 1956. So, at the youngest, Sam is 56 years old! My vet thinks he's years older than that. He would have been an egg or very young neonate--and they didn't quarantine hatchlings as a general rule. His leg band is an open-ringed large-bird band. He was quarantined as a full sized bird probably 2-10 years old. I bought him when I was in high school (many, many, MANY years ago) from a man that owned him for about 20 years. He told me has was the bird's third owner.

However old he is...Sam has had a great life! He's never been a real cuddly bird, but he can be picked up and he loves to have his head scratched. That's partially because he was wild-caught and partially because he's an Amazon--they are not super cuddly. His vocabulary is about 3-400 words! He talks a lot! He constantly makes up new words by joining two old words together or gives new meanings to old words. He's very clever. He is showing some signs of aging and previous poor care. He can no longer fly as all of his air sacks are de-flated and he has "floaters" on both eyes. All in all, he's still a healthy (but old) bird.

He's been great company and I've carted him all over the USA. He's lived in several states as my pet. I only wish I could see what his life was like prior to my guardianship...

Good for Sam, what an incredible bird. I too would be wondering what his life was like before.

Here are a couple of pictures of the old man:

In the head shot you can really see the spots on his eyes that occlude his vision. He was molting so his feathers look a bit rough. Normally they are smooth and shiny.

Despite his age, he's still a handsome bird! He does look like he wants a head scratching :)
