Hi guys!

I have been looking everywhere for helpful information about Red Eared Sliders and I finally came across this Forum! IT IS BRILLIANT! Its so great that everyone here takes out the time to help other turtle owners. Thank you so much!

I'm a medical student studying in India. My dad decided to buy me 4 Red Eared Sliders as a surprise 3 months ago! Unfortunately, one of them died the very next day after being well looked after at my home. They were kept in a tiny bucket with 50 other turtles and being sold illegally which is what I think might have caused the death. Not enough food maybe? My dad felt really bad for them and decided to buy 4 of the smallest ones who seemed to be struggling.

The other 3 turtles are doing great!

I've named them Simon (left), Nathan (above the other two) and Aleisha (right) after characters from my favorite TV Show. I named them even though I don't really know their sex -- I'm depending on what the pet store owner told my dad. Somebody told me I have to wait a year before figuring that out!

Simon seems to be growing the quickest! He is super friendly and doesn't shy away from human beings at all! Nathan is the naughty one. Aleisha is timid and shy but she bosses over both the boys. Girl power!

They've been living in huge tub with things from nature in it and have regular exposure to sunlight which they love to bask in every morning. But I'm considering buying them a tank with a UV lamp. Not really sure what to do.

I adore my turtles and this site is really going to help me figure out how to take care of them. So thanks a lot!

If anybody could help me figure out if my turtles are male or female that would be wonderful! So please let me know!

Welcome to the site! Very nice pictures, but it's too early to tell what sex they are. In the meantime, you might want to feed them separately to ensure each gets their own share of food.

I'll need to separate them when they reach sexual maturity. Males can harass females and males become territorial and therefore aggressive to other males. Don't know much about females to females... They're happy alone as adults. They'll need bigger tanks (10 gallons per1" of turtle ) as they mature. Best to get a huge tank and not have to upgrade every year in my opinion...

HI,I am a new RES owner too...i just got hem a day ago! ...there doing pretty good i was wondering if u know how to get them to bask because they havent basked yet sice i got them...there not babies there...i think like a few yrs...idk well anyway thx bye

@jackanne71> If you have the proper lighting and basking setup see here: http://www.redearslider.com/index_light ... ing.html#x your turtle will bask by itself. Turtles can be shy / skittish and and may not want to bask for a few days until it's comfortable with it's new surroundings.

Sheldon was skittsh but once I got the air and the water set, he was basking like nobody's business.
