We just got our newest family member. Shell E. Slider, is a 4 year old RES. Shell E. joins Pearl, our 2 year old Boxer, and Scorponox, my oldest sons Emp. Scorpion.

Shell E. will become my wifes class pet next school year. His school home will be a 55 gallon tank thanks to some very good friends. I am just getting started on setting that tank up. I want to make it look as natural as possible. I am building a top for it to hide the lighting and to keep mischevious little hands from even thinking about reaching inside.

This is our first turtle and he is great. I didn't know that res were so social and active. Shell knows who we are. The sound of his food can. and when to go slow when eating. Like taking food from my fingers.

Any comments or hints are always welcome. I have been lurking around for a bit now and learned so much already. But there is so much more to learn. And others experiences are even more valuable.

Hi, Welcome to a great site. I always think its so cute, how gently they take the food from my hand. I wanted to see how hard chompy could really bite so I left my hand in the tank like a piece of food. The bite wasn't too bad, but after she bit down she used her front two feet to try to pull a piece of my finger off, which is when I shook her off. She is about 5 inches and did not break skin.

I love your name Shell E. Slider ... very cool. Good luck with your turtles.
