what's up everyone...

i have been visiting this site a lot recently to gather information on how to properly care for my girlfriend's two reeves turtles, and i decided to finally join up! at first, i didn't really like the turts cause all the times i had to change their stanky water and clean their tank, but now they have been growing on me and i want to do my best to make sure they are ok.

If you get a nice setup with a good filter and lots of water, you won't have to change that "stanky" water! Good to have you here! I'd love to see pics, I'm not familiar with Reeves turtles ...

haaha oh man, the water got rank QUICK from these guy's initial tank that they were in. she had them in a 20 gal with no filter and 4 inches of water! i got so annoyed from cleaning the tank so often, and as a result, she decided to get a filter for them to help out with the smell and maintenance.

i just upgraded from the fluval 205 to a 405. i used some media from the 205 and placed it into the 405 to help it cycle faster. the 205 was running a 40 gal breeder with two adult turtles, and honestly, it just wasn't cutting it. i made an in-tank basking area with PVC pipes and plexiglass so i could raise the water level up a bit. but there were some flaws with my design, and i decided to take it out. luckily, the piece of cork bark that i put on the platform managed to fit perfectly between the front and back of the tank, so i just wedged it in and the turtles seem to like it.

i am working on taking some pics of the turts, but i can't seem to find my camera battery charger!

my next goal is to get a bigger tank for these guys because the 40 gal is way too small for both these guys. i was thinking an 80 gal would suffice. the turtles have shell lengths of about 4-5 inches.

any suggestions?

Do you know if they are boys/girls/both? Like I said, I'm not familiar with Reeves turtles, but if they are like RES, they can quickly get aggressive, and if you have both a boy and a girl, they can breed. You would need at least an 80-100 gallon right now, so if they don't grow any, you might be fine, but if they continue to grown, they might outgrow that tank (although if you have aggression issues, you can use an 80 gallon tank pretty nicely for one turtle). A lot of people like stock tanks or ponds and use those for indoor ponds and they end up being cheaper. If you want any further advice or ideas, post a new topic in the habitat section or search the site. Sounds like you are trying to give the little ones a good life, good for you!
