Hi! Introduce yourselves here. :: Our First Turtle

Well my boyfriend and I just moved into an apartment together and I've always loved turtles but have never had the means or time to take one in. So we decided to make the commitment and went on a search to find a turtle. We first started looking for the little turtles, but where we live they do not sell under4 inches, so we decided to go to a pet store and see about a tank and food and everything. We ended up buying a 55 gallon tank to start with and a 40 gallon water filter, a heater, a thermometer, and basking area. Our turtle is named Izzie, and we recently found that she was a girl and not a boy like we originally thought. She has grown from about 4 inches to 5 1/2 inches. We are going to be upgrading her tank soon to a nice 125 gallon, so that we won't have to worry about upgrading anymore. As our first turtle, she is a part of our family, and we joke with our parents about how they have a granddaughter now! Well thats about it, thats our story!!

Hi ann welcome Congrats on your new turtle friend, i'm sure you're so excited! I'm sure she'll love having that nice big tank, she's probably starting to feel a little cramped in the 55 gallon. Those lady turtles get big!

Welcome too the site, looks like your pretty set with everything. Your filter isn't nearly has powerful as it should be, but the one you have is a start.

Actually, it's illegal everywhere to sell turtles under 4", so you wouldn't have found one legally anyways. The baby ones are cute, but they come with their own complications! I would recommend when you upgrade your tank that you look into a canister filter. They seem better suited for turtle wastes and waters. Two brands that you'll find on here a lot are Fluval and Rena, each has their own followings of people. Ask away if you have any questions about feeding or nesting sites or anything else! Welcome!
