Well, we are helping a friend who is going through a very rough personal situation...we became owners of 3 tough turtles. (I say tough because they survived with little/no care for days at a time in an unheated mobile home...). The turtles actually appear healthy and active! Maybe they survived on the algae that was quite thick when we rescued them. They had no heaters or filters. When they did get fed for the last few months, I think they were fed goldfish pellets. Thanks to this site, I am learning how to care for them. We have had them for about 4 days now. 2 of them are Red Eared Sliders, a large female (8 or 9 inches), and a male (about 5 or 6 inches). They are in a 75 gallon tank. We also have a male painted turtle, who is agressive (my daughter says he is "mean"!). The painted is in a 30 gal tank, and is the size of the male RES. After an expensive trip to the pet store, we are improving their homes, but we have a long way to go. I will have lots of questions (heaters, proper basking lights, proper filters, thermometers etc). For now, they are eating Exo-terra aquatic turtle food.
