Hello! I am so new here that the ink is still wet on my registration! I have found this site SO invaluable. Thank you, thank you!

A little about us: My husband and I are huge animal lovers. He is a surgical resident, I am a college instructor, and we are temporarily living in Cincinnati for his residency. We have five black cats of our own (I KNOW! Just happened that way) and are also the caretakers for a small band of loving and beautiful semi-ferals who live on or about our deck (yes, the female is spayed. We are working on the boys one-by-one now!)

As my birthday gift, we rescued two red-eared sliders, and we just LOVE them, but obviously are still learning! They are so cute and curious. They seem to adore our cats, too. The cats will come to the tank, put their paw on the glass, and the turtles will swim right over and put their "flipper" up on the inside of the glass. It's so sweet! (There is something oddly "penitentiary visit" about it, though . . . ) The cutest is when the cats sleep on the chair next to the tank, basking with the turtles in the heat of their lamp!

The two species also share a love of tuna. We couldn't get the turtles to eat at first. I read here that tuna is an excellent enticement food - worked for us!

I have a question, which I will post appropriately. If anyone could help out, we would appreciate it!

Kimberly

Thanks! I appreciate the warm welcome.

Yes, they do have names, and good Jewish ones to boot. We are not Jewish, but for some reason they seem like Baruch and Shlomo to us! If you look up the meanings of those names, they are beautiful. We just happened across them in a show on National Geographic International. I do have pics but they are still on the camera. I will post them soon, I am sure!

They are brother and sister and about a year old. Sadly, we may have to get a separate tank as she is pretty aggressive. I noticed that she hardly lets him bask. We made him his own little stone island by the basking light, and he proceeded to "dig to China" and scatter it about the tank. Crazy things!

Greetings and Welcome to the Forum!

Having to separate turtles as they get older is a VERY familiar story around here. Sometimes they can co-exist for years - depends on the turtles' personality - but eventually most of them start fighting.
