I have had a RES for approx. 8 years and I had no idea what I was doing with him until recently, I found out that I wasn't taking very good care of his as I didn't know how much they required due to a lack of research. He was rescued by my son who's cousin was going to release him in a pond so we have had him in a MUCH too small enclosure for all these years. He now has a new tank w/ lights and a basking area and he is so much fun to watch. I just feel so bad that he had to wait so long to get it.

Greetings and welcome to the forum! Your story is a very familiar one. I had my turtle for three years before I found this forum and learned what I was supposed to be doing for him. He had develped a bad shell problem but now, after a year and a half of good treatment, he's doing great. Your turtle will thrive in a bigger tank and you two will have years of enjoyment together.

It's good you found the right info now. RES can be a very hardy species but it's good to learn the info on the main site and from the experiences on the forum.
Fell free to ask or tell stories and the forum is divided into several categories for particular questions/comments.
Welcome to the forum!
