Hi guys, I just joined but have used the site for a while, its great!! I have the cutest little turtle ever and his name is Franklin. My hubby found him crawling across the golf green and brought him home back in May and he was about 2" long MAYBE.......Well now he is a good 4" and we are in love with him. I never would have thought I would own a turtle and said I was gonna return him when he got big but we are too attached now, so i am getting ready to upgrade his tank. Just wanted to say Hi!!

Welcome!!

So your turtle has grown two inches in the span of three months. That doesn't sound right. What is his care like?

Hi and Welcome to the Forum! I really want to see a pic of your turtle if he's the cutest ever! However, he couldn't really be the cutest turtle ever because that would be......my turtle Spot!

To grow two inches - double in length - in just three months would be very fast growth. If he's really grown that much he's probably being overfed. The hardest thing with these turtles (especially the cute ones!) is to resist over feeding them. They are master beggers (they know they're cute) and will convince you they're about to starve if you don't feed them some more right now - but the truth is they are reptiles and their metabolism is slow and they don't need as much to eat as mammals of the same size. Too much food - especially protein - will cause all sorts of health problems over the long run. Since we want our turtles to live their full life span of 40 years or more, we have to be strict with their diets. Here's everything you ever needed to know on feeding a turtle. If you follow these guidelines you can't go wrong:

You can measure him and see if he is actually four inches. I was guesstimating with Mikey and when I measured him with a measuring tape I found I was over an inch off. Just measure the shell from the tip by the neck to the tip by the tail (not including the curve) and see if he's as big as you think.

You all have been a lot of help, I did check out the guidelines for feeding and we are just feeding him daily, just maybe we are feeding him too much. Because yes, he does beg and gets very excited when he sees the food container!! And I will get him out and actually measure him but even without that he has grown quite a bit since we first got him.

Thanks ya'll!!

Im back again. I took him out today and measured him, he is acutally 3-1/4" long and now that I look at 2" I think he probably was a little bigger than that when we found him, so he hasn't grown as much as I thought, but it sure does look it!

Yeah, it looks like they become little monsters quite quickly. When I looked at Mikey, I was so sure that he was at least five inches if not more, but he's just over four inches  . Now that your measurements are accurate, his growth doesn't sound bad.
