Prologue: It was sometime after Miguel’s dead that my father bought 3 little RES. Their story will be told but for now let’s return to Sarapica’s life.

Due to the Sun, the little bath tub began to show signs of old age and it was decided that another “pond” was needed to accommodate our 4 turtles (by this time the RES were already big enough to be taken to the backyard).

The pre-formed pond was placed in a hole in the lawn.
Sarapica didn’t mind the new guests although sometimes she got irritated by their paws in her head – and tried to bite them.

But Sarapica didn’t live in the water so the problems between species were almost nonexistent.

And then my parents decided to move again and bought another house, this time with 3 independent zones large enough to be used as habitats although much smaller compared with the previous backyard.

Since Sarapica and the 3 RES could share the same pond, they were put in one of the zones together.

Looking back, I think that it was foolish of us to keep them together. Although nothing wrong happened between them, European Pond Turtles are too much different from RES.

It's wonderful that through all the moves, the people coming and going (I suppose), and time passing, Sarapica remains a constant. You and your family have a special bond with the wild world.

I wonder what the miracle will be????

Although Sarapica doesn’t have webbed feet she was always a good swimmer with perfect buoyancy control.

But one summer day something went wrong. As I was doing my commonly check-up on them I found Sarapica on the bottom of the pond motionless.

I took her out and gently put her in the pavement near the pond, letting her neck stretch naturally. She looked dead! Her eyes were “glassy” and there weren’t any movements that I could see. By then I was crying, and I mean CRYING! Another mystery? Did she drown? How could she have drown? There were no signs of bites or any injury in her skin or shell. It happened in broad daylight and it was impossible to have been caused by a rat or cat.

There’s something strange about facing the death of loved ones. Although I though she was dead, the way I touched and talked to her showed otherwise. There’s always a part of us that doesn’t believe, that wants to be wrong.

For several minutes nothing happened...and then she moved a little. At least that was what it looked like to me. And a little more.
I wasn’t dreaming, she was really starting to regain “consciousness”. Even her eyes were becoming normal.

The joy was indescribable! I didn’t know if I wanted to cry or laugh. Sarapica was back and that is what I consider one of the happiest moments of my life!

Epilogue:
Sarapica got her old bowl of water back and was kept alone in “zone 2”. We couldn’t be near her all the time and I sure wasn’t going to take any more chances. Sarapica agreed!

Note: I don’t believe that she returned from the dead. She almost lost her life but by taking her out of the water in the nick of time and keeping her warm under the Sun, enabled her to recover. Sarapica and I were very lucky.

@ DavidY - The other zone (3) has two land turtles that my parents bought in Italy.

@ Sportsmama – You’re right, almost everything in my life changed and then there’s Sarapica. If it wasn’t for those “episodes” I would always take it from granted that she would be forever with me.

@ myrtletheturtle- Sarapica weights 656gr (1.4 pounds) and has a length of 15cm (5.9 inches).

@ turtlelover95- . What a big family you’ve got!

I wonder what happened to cause Sarapica's near death experience? You would think that with a name like "pond turtle" that she'd be an excellent swimmer. Maybe, though, after having lived more than a half century as a land turtle she wasn't able to handle a crisis in water as well as a life long aquatic turtle.

She was an excellent swimmer and there were no signs of injuries... I really don't understand what happened. Maybe it's like you said, a crisis...!It was very strange!

One day, more or less six years ago, I noticed that Sarapica had the rear right leg swollen.
She was promptly taken to a veterinarian that works with exotic pets. He diagnoses a fractured bone, gave her some antibiotics and recommended that she stayed in a small area so that she didn’t move much.

The leg began to get better and after some time, Sarapica returned to her normal routine outside. However several weeks after her full recover her leg began to swell again.

This time I went to the clinic and told the vet that he had to tell me about all the alternatives beside keep feeding her antibiotics forever.
The alternative was a chirurgical procedure to remove her leg. He guaranteed that it was perfectly safe and she would have a normal life afterwards. He was right!

Sarapica lost a leg but got her “good” life back.

Ladies and Gentlemen: The other side of Sarapica. (don’t worry, she gave me permission to show this picture  )
