I tried to change his name from Ethel to either Ethan or Othello, but my 8yr old daughter would not hear of it. Still haven't decided what to do about the name.

Welcome! What's in a name anyway as long as it was given with love and sounds like it was! I'm sure Ethel will be very happy with you guys. I also think that your turtle is much older than 6 months. My little guy is 5 inches and the vet estimates he is about 2-3 years old.
As for people in pet stores they know nothing about the turtles they sell. We got ours from our neighbor who was given one of those stupid tanks with the side cut out and dinky filter and a florescent light and was told that was all the turtle needed. Go figure.
You're much better off getting advice from the folks on this site.

GlaD TO Be A MeMBeR, :) I have a 2 yo male turtle and a baby turtle 2-3 months old, I'm interested in knowing more about them,
hugs, Albert, Donatello and Baby turtle and bunch of tropical fishes( 3 acuariums) :)

Welcome :) I think Ethel is a great name. My guy might be a girl and he's stuck with the name Tucker.

And I had a pet store try to sell me a 5-6" RES that was "under" 6 months old. :?
