Hi,

We just got two baby RES (1" dia) and am setting up their home.

Have a 10 gallon tank, small pebbles covering bottom, then very large stones on one side for basking. 5 gallons of water in tank, fluval 1 filter. Tank sits by window. Turtles are active and are eating well.
Water temp is 75 so I think they are warm enough.

Anything else? Very pleased with this filter. Might add 2-3 tiny fish and and if they eat them sobeit.

Hello and Welcome to Turtle Talk! Very cute turtles. Your set up looks nice. You are going to need a UVA and a UVB light. Also do you have a filter. Turtles are very messy. You can also read the RES Basic Care. It is located at the very top of the page.

y, I have a Fluval 1 Plus.
It is an underwater 50 GPH filter which I think it PLENTY for the 5-6g I have in there.

Pleaes update us if you have gotten your basking and uvb light. You can also fill the water level higher and get a floating basking rock (they have them @ most pet stores)

Hi, please keep your tank away from to window to prevent sunlight from reaching in and from any breezes coming through. I'd also get a stable basking area... they like to dig and move things around - I'd be concerned about the stability of what you have. Also remove the gravel, that is an impaction hazard and will hurt your water quality. Do you have any thermometers? For hatchlings, you can keep the water at 78-80 degrees.

i agree with steve... get a stable basking area... a long time ago when i first got my turtle, i tried to give him a basking area made of rocks similar to that.

i found myself constantly moving them back into the pile... many times a day, as he loved to dig and move them all around.....

i recommend a zoo med floating turtle dock, they are wonderful.

keep in mind that u eventually will need to upgrade to a bigger tank .
you might want to just get the large dock so that you dont need to buy a bigger one later..
it will save u money in the long run

Cute little turtles. Space is at a premium in that 10-gallon tank, though, and it would be better if they had a basking area that would allow them swimming room underneath (as well as a place to hide). The stacked rocks, aside from being possibly dangerous, take up too much space.

Did you buy them? Because (at least in America) if they are under 4" dia, they are illegal to buy or sell.

If you bred them, then you're in the blue.

But otherwise...

Why? to stop salmonella from spreading.

Wes_RES, everyone here on the board knows that they are illegal to sell under 4 inches, but there are legal loop holes that many hobbyist and breeders use to sell smaller ones any ways. Even at that, it IS NOT illegal to own one under 4 inches.

Actually, it is illegal to sell a turtle less than 4"; however, it is not illlegal to buy or own them. And they can be sold as hatchlings as long as the new owner "certifies" (usually by signing) that the turtle will be used for "educational purposes".

Also, about the salmonella - I recently found out that ALL reptiles can carry salmonella, yet only turtles have size restrictions. In the 1980s and early 1990s, many toddlers were found to be infected with salmonella, several of whom owned turtles. These toddlers would put the turtles in their mouths or handle them and not properly wash up afterwards. Guess the parents must have thought it was "cute" to let their young children put the turtles in their mouths (probably for the possibility of a $10,000 prize on America's Funniest Videos). That started the turtle size restriction in the U.S.

Yep... Thats it... but today, you are more likely to get Salmonella from raw eggs (trust me: all guys have tried that) than the turtle because they are now sanitary.
