If you're using a reptisun 10.0 compact, then you do need to be careful about placement of the bulb as it can hurt turtles' eyes if not positioned correctly. Here is some info from ZooMed (the manufacturer) on how to use these bulbs:

On the heat lamp, you don't really need a fancy bulb - just a regular household incandescent will do. It should be positioned over the basking area close enough that it heats the area to 88 to 90 degrees fahrenheit but not so close that water can splash up on it and cause the hot light bulb to shatter, or so close that the turtle can touch it and get burned.
