I had a eastern painted turtle as a teenager in the 60's. I have loved turtles ever since but had birds for years. This summer I became caretaker for unwanted box turtle carolina triungis named Dozer. Then low and behold a red eared slider male 6 inches named Claude found by friends in a in- ground swimming pool and taken in by the first rescuer, who was given a 4 inch res for "free". A few months later they both were too much for my friend. Well, I 've gotten an intense education for turtles thanks for sites like redearedslider.com. Claude and baby turtle went to vet $158.00. Claude gave new companion his septacemic shell illness. If she had not shown signs right away, and not for computer info they could have died. It just looked like they were shedding scutes but unevenly and then round patches of shedding, no white patches. but the edge of Claude shell showed too much wear to bone (vet showed me), the carapace both upper and lower next to skin had brownish spots and blotches( vet showed me), his bottom carapace down the length and center of shell showed a pinkish red, ( vet showed me) . I had started to pay attention that Claude wasn't eating anymore, also. Still. I was ignorant and took to vet by a feeling. So, I'm posting these symptoms for others. Also, the vet said Claude's wild adventures scraped his shell allowing septocemia to get into blood. I have since removed any rough rocks.
