Hi there,
I am a new RES turtle owner. I did not buy my turtle. My mom found it in her yard and she didn't know what to do with it so I decided to take it in and take care of it. I have researched many many topics on red eared sliders but there is still so much I don't know. This turtle is small. He's a baby. I've only had him for 5 days. I'm worried he is sick. He does eat but won't come out of the water (I've never seen him bask) and this morning he was sleeping hanging on to the fake plants I have in there and he was somewhat sideways with his head just a little above the water. Is that normal for him to sleep that way? Like I said he is eating and I don't notice any sneezing or eyes swelling. He does have some skin shedding from his little neck but that's it. I have seen him swim and he doesn't swim lopsided or anything. He's very shy and when I come around he just hides in between the plants. I'm worried my tank water is too cold. I do have both the basking lamp and the UVB lamp sitting on top of the aquarium (on top of a metal cover). I turn the lights on for 12 hours during the day and turn them off for 12 hour during the night. So this morning when I went in there to turn the lights back on, according to my thermometer that I have in the tank, it said it was 70 degrees. I'm worried he's too cold. I don't want him to get sick. I don't know much about reptiles or turtles but I am a responsible pet owner and am trying to do what I can to take care of him properly.
Can anyone give me any advice? I would much appreciate it. By the way, my turtle's name is Crush, like in Finding Nemo :-)

I wouldn't worry much about how Crush sleeps. My Trixie sleeps all sorts of different ways, legs fully extended or all tucked in, or just one sticking out. She's too big to hang on the plants though. I am not 100% sure on your water temps, although they are only about 10 degrees cooler than my tank. However, Crush will have to warm up to his new environment in order to feel comfortable enough to bask. If I am wrong on anything, there are plenty of experts here to set us both straight :)

the thermometer in the tank, is it in the basking area, or in the water? do you have a water heater?

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate it. I'm a little relieved that Crush sleeping kinda goofy isn't a bad thing. I'm still worried about the water temp though. The thermometer on my tank is the kind that has suction cups and is inside the tank. Its on the basking side. I do not have a water heater yet. I went to purchase one last night and darn it I got the wrong one! So I'm going back today to get another one. I need one that I can lay horizontal in the tank because right now I have him in a 20 gallon tank and the water is only about 6-7 inches high and the thermometer I bought yesterday is the vertical kind and it alone is 12" tall and it can only be put in the water vertically. I will probably keep it anyways for when I move him into a bigger tank with more water. But I desperately need to get his water warmer. Any recommendations on a good water heater that can lay horizontal (side to side, not up and down)? By the way, he ate really good last night. I am feeding him meal worms and crickets. Should I be feeding him anything else since he is so little?

Ebo Jager are the best heaters and are fully submersible. You can cut down on the other stuff and try to use a good pellet, like Baby Reptomin.

Welcome!
Figuring out the norm of your little one can be a full time job :)
The goal is to have the basking area 10-15 degrees above the water temp. That will prompt him or her to find a cozy warm area to bask.
Have you checked out the main site? Lots of info to get you up and running.
When taking in a turtle from the wild it is a good idea to get a quick vet check-up. That sets everything up for a great start, since they often have illness that is ok in the wild, but not necessarily something for domestication.
Again, welcome! !!

Thanks for your replies. I finally got the water temp at 80 degrees and he seems to be doing pretty good. He's eating good and swimming some. I even caught him basking but the little stinker dives into the water when he sees me. So I guess he's ok.
