Hello everyone!

My names Amanda and I am a proud NEW owner of my first RES turtle, Franklin. I have only had fishes as pets before, and I actually recieved Franklin as a gift from my friend for my 19th birthday...I was quite suprised. At first, I thought it would be pretty easy to maintain and wouldn't get very big...and then my mom pretty much had a heart attack when we went to our local pet store  "Franklin will be the size of a dinner plate" ...A DINNER PLATE. yeah, oops. sorry about that mom :)

Franklin is currently living in my bedroom, in what I believe is a 30 gallon tank. I bought a whole kit for him at a local pet store, and its mainly Zoo Med products (came with food, a filter, a LED light, a basking lamp, floating basking spot and some other things). His tank temperature is normall 73-75 F however I haven't really checked the temperature of his basking area since I set it up a few days ago. He seems to be quite afraid of me, to be honest. Everytime I move, or enter the room he jumps off his basking spot and swims frantically...is this normal? Don't want to scare the poor little guy...

Hope to get to know some other RES owners and possibly get some tips on how to get this little guy to live as long as me! :)

Happy swimming!

Hi Amanda and Franklin! Dinner plate sizes usually means a female RES. As for being startled... it does take some time though to become settled, though it really doesn't take much to get them spooked sometimes.

Welcome to the forum!!!!
Don't worry about jumping off the dock when you enter the room. It's normal. They can be quite skittish.
Just start talking to him/her as you come near the room. Eventually, he/she won't get so spooked.
It may be a good idea to figure out if it is a male or female...in the long run some behavior/conditions will be normal or abnormal based on sex.

Have fun reading the topic-specific forums! They are quite informative :)
