We are now caregivers to a female RES that we rescued from a pet store (why oh why can't they take better care of their animals
) and our son is ecstatic. He has been wanting a turtle since he could talk, he's two and a half so other then watching the turtle he has no interaction 
but that is enough for him. We have two dogs as well, again both rescues - spoiled rotten just like our turtle will be.So far we've got her in a 20 gal long while we search craiglists and what not for a bigger tank for her. Right now it works well because she isn't that big but we know she's gonna be a fatty fat
. We have the 501 canister filter (and I'm thinking about getting a small submersible in tank for the other end) , she has turtle bones & a good mix of food (pellets/veggies/freeze dried yummies), a basking area & uv/heat lamp, little minnows to chase around, and she's in a quiet corner in the house so not a lot of activity to jar her tank.
