Hi everyone,
I just rescued a RES after it was left behind when the owners moved out of their rented house. Not sure if the res is a male or female. The tank was filthy and smelled so bad the new tenant's thought it was dead and put it outside in below 0C or 32 degrees temperatures. The poor dear was outside in freezing temperatures for over 2 days when I found out and went and got the tank and turtle. It had ice forming on his shell (which is about 4-5") and he had ice on his head. The water that was left(about 3" in a homemade 10gallon tank) was almost frozen solid. I put him inside to gradually warm up and went to my local pet store to get what I would need. I placed him in a container with new/treated water and offered some pellets while I cleaned the tank and replaced the water and added a canister filter, water heater, uv lights and a basking light. I love the forum for the advise it gives. I really want this turtle to thrive. It has had a tough life so far. Will keep you posted.

Welcome to the forum! Great job on the rescue, I'm very glad he/she found you. At that age, long nails will indicate a male.
