I have two res indoor in a 55gal fish tank each has an approx 6" shell. They are about 18months old. I bought them from a lady who had just purchased them online from NY and came in need of some money for medical reasons so my wife convinced me to get these guys. When I got them their shells were only about an inch or two and they were in a tank with goldfish,2 common plecos, no rock, had a terrible filter, no light and no basking platform.
Current Setup:
55gal tank, river rock, large gravel, undergravel filter, two powerheads @160gph, fluval 405 filter, fluval 300 watt heater, floating log, floating 18"x9" basking dock, whisper air pump, dragon bubble decor, cfl uva/uvb 10.0 light, incandescent 60watt bulb, no goldfish, 2 12" common plecos, tank is 45gal full of water.
Future additions:
120gal tank, another fluval 405, another fluval heater, ceramic heatlamp
Things I need to fix:
get rid of gravel and replace it with river rock, provide a better diet
Prior to getting these guys I had no knowledge of res, im a fish guy, but my wife loves them so I take care of them.
Currently Im feeding them only zoo med aquatic turtle food 5/16" pellet with 25% protein. I just read that I should be around 40% so I guess Ill need to be changing their food. Originally I was feeding tetra reptomin and switched over because I thought I needed a bigger pellet. I have been daily feeding for over a year now with no issues until a week ago. I originally had 3 turtles, but one got sucked into the intake after it knocked off the basket that keeps this kind of thing from happening. Problem fixed, I put a screw into the basket so it cant be removed. After this traumatic event my other two stopped eating as much. I dont know if this is coincedence or what since I am definately overfeeding according to the information on this site. Starting tommorrow Ill be feeding everyother day, which is how they seem to be eating currently. Should I be concerned or was this bound to happen? Thanks in advance. Ill get some pics up once my water settles down(just cleaned the filters).
