New RES owner here. I've had Dert for almost two weeks now. One day I was driving home and on the street I see this turtle crossing a really busy street! So I pull my car over and grabbed him before someone ran him over. I have absolutely no idea where he came from since there are no ponds or lakes anywhere near my house within a 20-25 mile radius. I thought maybe someone lost their turtle so up the signs went. No one has responded yet. He seems to be doing really well in the tank (30 gallons) that I had laying around. His shell seems pretty beat up but I'm hoping it'll get better with a few sheds? And if no one responds to the lost turtle adds do I assume he's a wild turtle and drive out the distance to put him a lake/pond or just take care of him as I am doing now?

Well here's some pictures of Dert! :3

He has these really pretty swirls on the underside of his shell. Are they just markings or should they be something I need to worry about?

His home. (Hopefully just for now!)

As you can see his shell looks pretty beat up. ):

Hi, welcome to the site. How he responds to people is a good indication if he's a wild turtle. Males don't wander off from their wild habitats often. It's usually gravid females who need to lay their eggs. His shell does look like it only needs a couple of good sheds too. If you are to keep him, you'd need a much larger tank for him.

If no one does respond to the lost turtle adds I think I will keep him. I've been keeping an eye out on CL for a good deal on a much larger tank so hopefully someone claims him or I find a nice cheap one.

How would a wild turtle respond to people as opposed to a captive one? He seems to like people, doesn't hiss or nip. And isn't shy at all.

Thankyou. He's about 4.5 inches so a new tank is really needed and I've been on the hunt! I'll definately think about posting them to the photo contest. (:
