Hello Fellow Red-Eared Slider Owners,

I inherited my daughter's red-eared slider left over from a Girl Scout project that she did with her mother. Nick, (rechristened "Sir Nicholas" by my daughter this summer), is a male and roughly 8 years old. He appears to be in good health and has survived all my attempts at killing him off. Just joking.

I am someone who would never think of adopting a pet and would never, never think of adopting a turtle. My pets tend not to last too long. However, Nick seems to tolerate me quite well. I do want to take care of him while not making a lot of work for myself. Cleaning a turtle tank is not exactly my idea of fun.

I am quite happy to see there is a website for red-eared sliders so I can spend some time here when new issues come up.

In my eternal quest to make cleaning Nick's tank easy, I spoke to the clerks at our local Pet Pantry Warehouse in Greenwich, CT and got the usually conflicting advice. After some fits and starts, I have settled in to buying him an Aqueon 30 tank which holds 30 gallons and is 36 inches long. I bought him another large Turtle Dock as well. I have been told he really needs a 48 inch tank, but the space I presently have him in is exactly 36 inches wide. The 48 will have to wait a few years until my family room is ready for him.

I actually have several questions and will start a new thread with the first one as soon as I sign off here.

Thanks, Peter
