It's extremely early in the morning for me, so there probably are't a lot of people online, but I decided to write an introductory thread anyway. :D

I am the proud mother to two *rescue* turtles that I have affectionately named Tootsie and Roll. I am brand new to all of this so you will probably see a lot of posts from me. Yay!

I have owned reptiles in the past, but turtles are entirely new to me. It makes me a little skittish.

Past Adventures of Tootsie and Roll :

I consider them rescue turtles because up until now their care has been mediocre at best. A friend of mine received them as a gift completely unaware of the care and dedication I know it takes to keep happy, healthy turtles. She gave them to me because she was afraid she would be the cause of an early demise and so I gladly accepted them. HOWEVER! I was not expecting them this soon! I wanted a few weeks to gather everything I would need for them and take in as much information as I could.

I don't have the correct filtration, basking area or tank size to accommodate these little beauties. I was given a 20 gallon tank, a filter for half that size, two rocks, ten pounds of gravel (>.<) and a fake tree thing that I am getting rid of asap. They were being housed in a 10 gallon tank to lighten the load on the filter, but it has still created some problems.

I have to do major water changes every couple of days until I get the correct filter or build my own (which is the question I will be posting right after this). I've scrubbed everything down twice since I brought them home (less then a week ago) because I am afraid bacteria will set up in the tank. It has been and will be a lot of work until payday next week. I'm determined!

They are worth it though. I love them already.

I hope that in joining this forum I can speed up my research and put these little guys on a path to recovery.

welcome :) it's a rough start but after you get it down (and get the right filter, that helps A LOT and makes things a lot less frustrating) you will be glad you took them in. what kind are they? RES?

I am positive that one of them is an RES, I'm not so sure about the other. He (a generic term really, I'm not sure of the sex) does not have the red mark where his ear would be, he just has what I would call neon green stripes and red on his neck, shell, and front legs. I don't know if RES come in a variation like that. I would post pictures, but I have to wait a couple of days for my sister to get back with my camera as she went on vacation.
