My name is Rain. My boyfriend & I bought 2 baby RES turtles a little over a month ago at a fair. We named them Phoenix Jade & Squirtle T-1000. We've come to realize we purchased them from someone outside the fair who knew nothing about the species & later got talked into buying a tank from a pet store that was inadequate for their care. We are currently saving to get a bigger tank w/ a great filtration system.
Today at 5pm Squirtle passed away. I'm upset but I know we did everything we could for "him". Just makes me want to make sure PJ stays alive & thrives. I have no idea where & what environment and conditions they came from but I will do my best to keep PJ & possibly future turtles in my care alive, happy & well taken care of.
From this experience we have both learned a lot and hope to have & raise more in the future.

Caring for babies can be difficult, apparently. Even under the best conditions they aren't always guaranteed to make it into adulthood.

I'm in a similar position with my baby RES, Enbi. Enbi was an impulse buy made by a friend who meant well and wanted to get me a gift. After researching his needs I realized I was not initially prepared to take care of him at all, and right now I'm scrambling to get him a decent habitat. He's currently living in a bare tank with a washcloth (it mimics water plants) and cuttlebone; he hasn't taken to any makshift basking platforms I've tried but he'll sit mostly elevated from the water on top of the cloth and pseudo-bask which is better than nothing. We're relying on an open window for basking and he has no water heater...it's scary because you want to do them right and assure that they thrive, but sometimes you have to play the waiting game and hope for the best, especially if they have shady backgrounds.

Welcome to the forum, from one newbie to another, and I hope PJ thrives. Me and Enbi will be rooting for her happiness and health. C:

I'm sorry to hear about Squirtle. I do wish you the best of luck with PJ. This forum will help you a LOT in getting PJ back to tip-top health & the best living conditions of any turtle around!

Thank you so much. Squirtle has been laid to rest, we're thinking about placing him in with some dandelions. PJ seems to be coping well w/ all the extra room. He/she (we still don't know... too small) was always the more excitable & eager to eat. We've reset the tank. The lighting in our current tank isn't the best so we take PJ outside for a few hours a day. I will be posting some pictures soon. [/list]
