My name is Joy and I found your site while searching the internet for Red-Eared Sliders info.

My daughter is actually the owner of 2 RES however, she studying abroad this semester and I am taking care them. She purchased them about 1 1/2 years ago from the Dollar store in Tucson AZ, 2 for $6!! Fast forward to today, the turtles are with me . I have only had them for 3wks but have become quite attached they definitely have their own personalities. We have their tank in the family room and I find myself watching them rather than the TV.

The turtle’s names are Goose and Squirt. Goose is about 3" and Squirt is a bit larger at 4". Squirt is definitely the dominate one and is always pushing Goose away from the food. I recently purchased "The Guide to Owning Red Eared Sliders" by Jordan Patterson and it has been quite helpful but I feel there is so much more to learn.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you thought about separating Goose and Squirt, since Squirt is the more dominate one? RES can be very agressive!

p.s. Of all the places to sell RES, i've never heard of selling them at the dollar store. Good luck with them

Turtle Mom 101; yes I have strongly suggested to my daughter that she only take 1 turtle with her when she returns ... she is thinking about it She doesnt want them to get lonely. I dont think she really is thinking about how much work they are and how big they get. I will continue to work on her.

Joy: I agree they are ALOT of work, are quite costly and can get very big. She dosen't have to worry about them getting lonely though because RES actually prefer to be on their own. If you keep them together, you run the risk of one turtle seriously injuring the other. If they don't try to take bites out of eachother, the dominant turtle will most certainly hoard most of the food and the passive turtle may not be getting what he/she needs.
