Hello, I am from seattle.
I do not have my turtle yet but me and my boyfriend are getting a RES on friday, and I am so EXCITED! I can't wait, thats all I have talk, read, and thought since we decided to get one about a week ago. If you have any brands, or anything you can suggest I am buying all the stuff thursday so i can set it up and then we are picking out or turtle friday. This will be my first turtle so I have been reading up a lot about diet, lighting, and all kinds of things. Any tips would be helpful. Any suggestions for a japanese name? We like anime lol  :D

Hi, welcome to the site. It's great that you are researching now, though what type of setup you need depends on the size and breed of the turtle.

You might want to reconsider the 20 long. At 4 - 6 inches the 20 gallon will already be too small for the turtle and he/she will continue to grow. The general rule of thumb is 10 gallons per inch of shell. I had my turtle in a 20 long when I first got her and she was less than 2 inches. Even with her being so small it was next to impossible to keep clean because the small volume of water gets dirty so quickly. believe it or not, a larger tank is easier to maintain in a lot of ways!

As far as Anime names, what shows do you like? There are so many good names! I have a Betta named Sesshomaru, and I think someone on this board has a turtle named Ichigo. Ranma would be a cute name, especially if you weren't sure of the turtles sex!

We are getting the turtle tomorrow, I will look into a big tank. I am guessing on the size. I only saw them once so far and I am a bad judge of size but I know they are at least 4 inches do to the laws. We decided on a mix of 4 anime names. Momo fuu-jin mugen. lol my boyfriend came up with it. Momo for short. its from samuri champlu(spl).

good luck. It is great that you are getting all the stuff for the turtle before you get him. I wish you the best and you definitely want to get a bigger tank.

i had a 20 gallon and was completely cleaning it every ten days. Since I've switched to the 75 gallon the water stays crystal clear all the time.
I have two female red ear sliders.
Chimpy - 5.5 inches
Chompy- 6.0 inches
Both were born about 7/2007
Got them -- 9/2007
