I've had quite hte variety growing up... a large number of fish, bunnies from before i can remember, hamsters, rats <3, dogs, cats, just one reptile and one bird... I had been really into fish when I decided to give turtle's a try, got one at local petco a year and a half ago, or maybe 2 years ago.. it's been a while, either way. I knew some of the stuff, and did some research but the site i found was very vague and i don't think it was very good, which is really unfortunate... word to the wise: always look at MULTIPLE sites to confirm your information and get all that there is to know -_- don't just findone that "seems" reliable and completely put all your trust in that.
that site did not mention why it was so important that the turtle bask in a cOMPLETELY dry area.. it just said it's important to have a place to bask. It did say not to get gravel, so i knew that, but it said nothing about UVB lighting. A pet store guy ended up giving me the wrong lighting (DONt. TRUST. PET. STORE. GUYS!! they may be right some of the time, but it's best to just confirm anything for yourself first) and we went on like this for nearly two years until now. Luckily I did know some things at least, like she had a good heat lamp, a thermometer and water heater, a large tank (though now I need another bigger one -_- such fast growers!), great filtration and since I kept fish i know about water cycling, siphoning, etc....
so now I'm here, glad to be getting the right info and trying to get my turtle back into her best shape, hopefully before a big move into my own house in January.
she's going to be coming along, too, not staying with my parents, and I'm pretty excited. Although, i'm moving in with my boyfriend who has a cat, so I'll have to seal up her basking area well hahah Oh well, we'll get to that when it comes...
