Hello my name is Michale and RES names are Frog and Toad. They are about 2 1/2 years old and share the same tank. I was told by another site to seperate them ASAP. To my knowledge they have never fought and get along great together. Can anyone tell me if they house their turtles together without any problems.

that also happens to me too. my baby red eared slider never fights with the older male. i dont separate them since they seem to be together most of the time. i dont really get problems unless the bigger one bangs on the walls of the tank really.

i doubt they would fight untill 1 of them gets bigger. i have seen fights in pet stores which dont end pretty. since the pet sore crams them in the tank they should be fighting in a small compacted space you know? but if somthing like fighting starts to happen thats when you do somthing cuz it can turn very serious and very bloody which isnt good

Eventually your turtles will fight, point blank. Young turtles can get along fine, but usually they become territorial around sexual maturity. A lot of owners have had to take their turts to the vet because one turtle took a literal chunk out of the other.

You can get egg crate or a tank separator so that you don't have to buy another tank, but then you'll have to get another basking platform.

I suppose with the right combination of turtles and luck you could end up housing two turtles together successfully. However, to be frank, it doesn't seem to work out in most cases. One important factor seems to be the turtles sexes. Although it's not guaranteed, usually males harass the females to the point where they (the females) attack them which means they'll have to be separated. Space is also an issue, it's very hard to provide enough room for two turtles in one standard tank- and I don't think they like to be able to "see" each other at all times, so having lots of plants and ways for them to feel hidden seems to sometimes work well.
The truth is, that turtles are pretty solitary, and RES are pretty aggressive. Mix those two traits together and most times it's a recipe for disaster.
By all means, if you haven't seen aggression yet, then don't separate them. Just know that when and if you see it, you'll need to be prepared to house them separately or try and re-home one.

p.s. I love the names! Frog and Toad were my favorite books when I was growing up.

Wow I had my RES living with each other for 15 years. And they never had a fight. When the first one pasted away , I got a new one and those two ago a long as well.

Thanks I love frogs is how they got their names. I believe both of my turts are males. I am upgrading to a stock tank and will leave them together for now.

Hello and welcome to the site. Why did the other site tell you to separate your turtles (there must have been a reason)? How big are they (shell lengths without the curve) and how big is the tank they're in?

It is possible for turtles to co-habitate peacefully, but just because someone else's turtles do and you say yours are now, it doesn't mean they will in the future (often they don't).

They each cover my hand when I hold one of them, I haven't measured them yet and I have a 125 gal tank. There was no reason, like I said the Happy Turtles Pub has some very rude people on it. I even checked with someone who rescues turtles and he said the same thing, that they can live together.
