Hi...I just wanted to introduce ourselves. My name is Chris and me and my son Chris Jr. just picked a 4 1/2" Red-Ear Slider at our local Petco. Let me know what you think. This is the first turtle I have had and thought it would be something cool for me and my 4 yr old son to enjoy together.

It looks like your turtle has some sort of sore on his neck.

Thank You for the pic and the welcome...I couldn't figure it out...Yes that is a sore on his neck...I was told at the pet store that he was attacked by a painted turtle. I told them if it does not heal up w/ in a week or so I would be bringing him back. They have a 15 day guarentee...so hopefully it gets better...well see tho...

For the sore, you need to make sure your water is VERY clean and you have all the proper things for the set-up. Do you have a picture? You should also be putting something on this sore.

Do you think I should maybe take the turtle back and wait until they possibly get a fresh shipment. They had 6 there and they were all attacked by the painted. The 1 I got was the 1 my son really wanted.

One more question...other then the sore on his neck does he/she look healthy?

I think he looks good other than the sore. There doesnt appear to be any shel problems or any swollen eyes. Keep the water clean and put some anti biotic ointment (Neosporin) on it until it heals up.

You should start putting antibiotic cream on her neck, so that it doesn't get infected.
Is that picture in a bathtub? What is her set up like?

As for trading her for another turtle, keep in mind that most petstores are getting their shipments in cold weather now so you can't be guaranteed that any turtle is healthy. And most pet stores have incorrect set ups. You'd be wise to look around the site and get your set up correct for whatever turtle you get, and consider after learning what turtles require whether one is a good fit for you.

I don't know how much you paid, but I guess I'd think of it this way, if I took the turtle back, and asked for another one, what's going to happen to the little one you took back?!? However, I'd demand that the store give you a written paper that states that if the turtle dies in the first two months (because you purchased him "damaged") you get a replacement. I don't know if Petco would do this, but I'd hope they would. Worth a try at least!

Well...me, my wife, and son have decided to keep this turtle and take care of him and give him a good home. If I knew exactly how to post pics or links to the pics correctly I would show you what I have right now. I'm keeping the setup clear of any plants and everything right now so that I can keep an eye on him. The only thing right now that is in there is a zoo med ramp and dock for basking, the basking lamp, filter, thermometer (sp), a sulfa rock, and the heater. He/She seems happy...swimming and basking and what not...so hopefully he'll heal up and everything will be ok. I know my son loves it he won't stop starring at him.

Just an update...Here are some shots of Leo...There are more in the photo gallery section. The sore on his neck is almost completely healed and I am really enjoying him in the house. I never thought turts would be that cool to have.

turtlemang welcome to the forum. Sry for the sore i hope will heal soon.

I read that you have a 4y old son. I am a father of a 8y old daughter and i will just point out the risk of salmonela.

After the kids(and not only) touches the water - tank or turtle they must wash their hands thorouqhly, just a word of advice since the pet is just bought and you r not sure in what conditions was kept before...

Steliosf...Thanks for the tip. I heard that before and make sure he does wash his hands very good. Thanks for the welcome from all of you. This is a great site w/ lots of useful info.
