Thanks for the welcomes! My setup isn't that big but it's a 30 gallon rubbermaid tank with a canister filter. I don't have a heater or a UV lamp because I use the sun. However, I will be getting them soon as winter approaches. :)

Are your turtles outside that you use the sun? or do you take them out?? Getting sunlight through a window does't count as the glass filters out the UVB rays .. :)

I take them outside to get direct sunlight. :P 15 minutes of direct sun is better than 5 hours of UV light from a lightbulb.

So your turts only get out of the water for 15 mins a day? They should be able to bask several hours a day, regardless if they are getting UVB.

Hello knite, welcome to the board :D

Steve is right, turtles don't just bask for the UV, they bask to warm up, since their body doesn't produce heat, they depend on their environment to provide the heat, mostly the sun, but if they are in an aquarium, they have to be able to get out of the water completely to dry up and get some heat. :D :D

Also, some think turtles only need to dry up their carapce, however, they must be able to dry both carapce and plastron. Doing this will prevent shell rot and other serious shell abnormalities and disfunction

Hey all again. I didn't think that there would be any more replies. Sorry for having to reply this late.

Nope, Both my turts do not bask for 15 minutes. Even I know that's not enough. :P When I'm not around to give them food, they are out basking happily. :)

I have a fluval 104 canister.

And Neptune is a great name for turtles because in mythology, Neptune is the god of water. :D
