Lonely turtle?

I am the proud owner of a 5 year old red eared slider. For this entire time it's been just him inside his tank. Of course I let him out to get more excerise but lately he's been acting weird. Before he would run to me when he wasn't too sure of his surroundings or something startled him. Now I let him out and he is right by my side the entire time. I feel like he's getting more lonely but I don't want to introduce another turtle if he will fight with the newby. Is there anything I can do? Is getting him a friend a good choice?
