As Hurricane Sandy, "Frankenstorm" approaches the northeast , please be safe and keep your shelled ones well. As it is cool out ( in the 50's), a little trick me and the wife came up with to make sure the water temps at least stay a decent temp is to wrap the tank with a heavy/thick blanket, and do constant water changes with warm water. How do you get warm water with no power? Well, if you have gas heater... use the sink :).. In the case you dont, boil some water on your grill :) (barring you have one).

But above all. BE SAFE!

I am probably one of the few here if not the only one that had to prepare their turtles in a different way. Seeing as so much rain is going to be comeing down I had to stop the stock tank from flooding outside allowing the turtles to escape. So a cover and lots of weight to stop the wind from lifting it.

Wind's been crazy here, just hoping my Internet connection stays up. Power never goes down too long around here, so turts should be fine.

We usually lose power here, and this would be the first time with the shelled family members. They are saying we may lose power for 7 days or more if it does go out. The blanket idea posted in one topic would work great for a night or two, but not for a week. Also, with no water circulation, water changes are needed. So while working out a plan, me and the wife figured use warm/ hot water to keep the water temps in a stable area plus keep the blankets wraped around the tank. :)

Haha, it was the turtle's offering to hurricane Sandy to leave them alone.

We unfortunately lost power and the blanket and hot water trick is working so far. Keeping temps at 80. 2 gallons of hot water every 8 hours seems to be doing the trick.... will keep everyone updated :D

Lost power for a few minutes... some flickering too. We're really lucky as well... though the MTA being down is really bad for me. Hope you're back up soon Troops!

We are back up and going! everyone is alive and active as usual. :) I modified the plan and along with the water changes, I added weighted down 1/2 gallon jugs filled with hot water as well to elongate the water staying above 76degF in the big tank. Needed changing every 4 hrs.
For the hatchlings, I never allowed the water to get below 77... Up every 2 hours changing about 4 cups of water and doing the water jug trick. They only have 4" of water in a 30g tank so, the water cooled alot quicker.
