Hi all,

It has been a LONG time since I've posted here but I've come back because I need help. The help is for a friend - not for me. She has five, yes five, turtles in a 90 gallon tank and now wants to re-home two or three of them. She has two RES and one YBS - all females I believe. These are the ones she is looking to get rid of. The other two turtles are diamondback something or others. So, my question is, does anyone know of any turtle rescues/sanctuaries near the Chicagoland area?

Please don't judge the situation - believe me I have lectured her enough on the topic and told her BEFORE she even got the turtles that she should only get ONE turtle. But her husband wanted a bunch of turtles and so here we are in this situation.

Oh, and my little guy Toby is happy and healthy in case anyone wondered :)

RES and YBS are too common for most people.

We have some links to some directories: http://www.redearslider.com/links_adopt ... scues.html I'd also check schools but also with the Chicago Herpetological Society

Another option is family/friends whom she could help setup with their care.

Hey meltedspork... long time. If my wife wouldn't shoot me I'd take one of them.

The other place in Chicagoland to check is Cosley Zoo in Wheaton. http://www.cosleyzoo.org/

Thanks guys for the info. I'm going to do my best to help her find new homes for them. She has tried to re-home them to people she knows with no luck.

@justawinturbo - I probably didn't word myself correctly - she is KEEPING the diamondback turtles (I forget what kind they are exactly but they are teeny tiny and fully grown). She wants to get rid of her three bigger turtles which are the RES and YBS.

@VeipaCray - You are a mod now! Definitely been a long time since I've been here!

Haha! I've been lurking here and there but haven't posted in a long time. Did some experimenting with filter media and finally bought some Purigen after reading your posts. My next task this summer is to finally build the ATBA I've been meaning to build since I got my 120g...oh...three years ago! So I'll hopefully be back on here more often.

I'm in Oak Lawn.

sorry for the confusion, I was hoping they were all available, talk your friend out of the diamondbacks. i'll trade for stinkpots haha. Kidding of course.

Edit: also, define teeny tiny? female diamondbacks get almost as big as red ears or yellow bellies, no turtles stay teeny tiny. Some species do stay in the 3.5" range for an adult male, but most females grow over 4"

VeipaCray - I will post pics soon - I have some neat pics I took with my underwater camera inside Toby's tank. I was experimenting on how to use the camera when I first got it :)

And just took a look at the filter media thread - nice work! I will read more of that today.

justatwinturbo - That's why I said "diamondback something or others" because really I have no idea what species they are. I just looked up "diamondback terrapin" and they are definitely NOT that. In doing more searching I think they might be Texas Map turtles. They are TINY and full grown. They are about 4 years old and they are maybe 3 inches each - no more than 4 inches. The bigger turtles could eat them for dinner if they wanted. They want to keep those two because of their size, so I don't think I will talk her out of them.

I'm in for pics purely out of curiousity, if they are texas maps, males get about 4" but females still get around 7 give or take. No turtle is ever full grown until they die...they grow until death
