I have 2 female RES that are about 6 years old and between 6 and 7 inches long. One of them has always been dominant, but now she has started to get very aggressive towards the other. I have them separated temporarily using a tank divider, but I do not have the space in my apartment for 2 large tanks to make permanent changes. Each has their own basking dock, UVB etc... This arrangement is OK for the short term to keep them out of danger, but will not work long term.

I love both of these turtles, but it appears I will have to give one up. I may even give up both because it's going to break my heart to choose just one. Far and away the most important thing to me is finding them a good home where they will be cared for the way I cared for them. My second hope is that whoever takes one or both can house them separate from other turtles because I have since learned that this kind of behavior is not unusual. I don't want to send either to a situation that is not much different than they are in now where they are in danger etc.. and have to be sent on down the line to someone else who may not care for them.

My final hope is that whoever takes one or both would be willing to stay in contact with me and let me know how they are doing and maybe send me a picture.

This is a very painful thing for me to do. If anyone is interested or has any suggestions, please contact me here and I will give you my email address, phone # etc...

I am in Queens NY. Someone fairly close would be better, but I am open. Thank you.

Sorry to hear it. I would try contacting turtlerescues.com They probably won't take in RES if they're full but maybe they can make a post if you're offering supplies too. They're LI based and have a huge following on Yahoo Groups. Maybe someone with the space can help you out.

I filled out their adoption form yesterday and am waiting to hear from them. I offered extra money hoping that would entice them. I can't tell you how upset I am. I can't imagine picking one to give up because they are so different and lovable in different ways. That's why I am actually considering giving up both. It might be less painful for "me". But I am worried sick that they get good care and really wish I could somehow stay in contact with the new owner.

My desperation option is to keep them divided for now and occasionally take one out to put in a very small holding tank. That would give the other some time to have the full tank to itself. Then I could divide them again in a couple of hours. Right now I am working from home so I could do that every day for awhile. In the not so distant future, I plan on getting a house. At that point I would have room for another tank. But that could be a year or more. I'm just not sure I am up to for the idea of taking care of TWO tanks anway. In fact I am fairly certain I am not, but the alternative of giving them away seems worse. I'm really confused and unhappy right now. :?

I completely understand the anguish. If you can be creative about how you keep their setups, then it's possible to keep two tanks. It's definitely more work to manage and is usually an unfortunate surprise. But you develop a routine and it makes it easier.
