I want to buy another turtle to go along with my 4 inch red ear slider. I will be able to take care of them and properly house them. I don't want another RES since they get very large, I heard painted turtles can stay small as 5 inches? But there's so many of them I cannot tell which is which. Also male or female? Ranger is a male.

Turtles don't really need friends. There may be aggression issues with any type of turtle you get. So if you do get another turtle be prepared to house them separately if needed. Also, a 4 in Res in a 40 gallon is good. If you put another turtle in there your going to increase your bio load to much. As your current turtle gets bigger your going to need a bigger tank. You could be lucky and they get along but your still going to need a bigger tank then.

^4 RES in a 40 is way to small!
10 gallons per inch.
1 4 inch. RES, 40 gallons by itself.

He said he has a 4 inch turtle in a 40 gallon, not 4 turtles.

Painted turtles can get much bigger then 5 in., but if you can get a big enough tank for both of them than I would get another turtle.

Depending on what subspieces of painted he would get. He could get ones that stay under 5inches but best bet would to estimate the painted would get at the 6inch mark.
