I'm new to this site so i figured i post some pics for y'all to get to know my turtle.This is Donatello . Just wondering if he looks healthy? I was told he was a boy.. he is a boy right? lol

My opinion, I think thats a Female.

Males have the big claws, Females have the small Claws.

im going back to petco tomorrow to buy some plants and feeder fish so ill ask the guy to take a look for me.. i dont mind a female id just like to know the gender lol sitting here calling it donatello when it could be female.. is breedng difficult?

in the field of breeding, i can tell you that you would need to put some work into your turtle but im not sure because i never had this problem. but read the section on reproduction and it will tell you everything you need to know.

also, having a female turtle produces eggs and from the size you have, i don't think she'll be making any eggs yet. so you might not have to worry.

Turtles don't start laying eggs until 4 - 6 years. They will lay eggs no matter what even if she is in there by her self.

Well, males are very disproportionate in comparison to females. Everything on a male RES is big: Large tail, extra long front nails (they get over an inch long when the turtle is full grown), long nose. Otherwise, males rarely grow over 9 inches, but, it can happen.

Typically, when a turtle reaches a shell length of 4 inches, the most distinctive gender characteristic is the length of the front nails.
