If the slider is breathing heavily, then you might hear a whistling sound. It's more noticeable in overweight/heavy turtles.

Hmm... So they hissing... I think my res is too small to hissing... I never heard anything from him...
But the wild turtle that always crossing the street in front of my neighbor house, it does hissing...

I believe that they have their own way of communicating pretty much how the entire animal kingdom does it. Though, I don't think we could ever decipher them.

As it goes with octopus, I bet that there are also dedicated groups taking action with discovering or even unraveling how they could probably communicate.

I swear my big guys chirped. i'm not crazy, my mom heard it also. i thought it was them rubbing up against the glass of the tank, but nope. if there was no daylight and i was running late on the feeding, i heard it. not a hiss, they did that also, when they want to be set down.

i have a red ear slider and occasionally i hear him making a quacking sound.. its a really weird noise. he also hisses when you surprise him.

My 3 larger guys make a quick squeaing sound. And hissing obviously.
