My turtle lives with quite a few fish. He never chases or eats them (strange turtle, not normal, may randomly start eating them someday), some of the fish have lived with him for almost 3 years. Anyhow I ran into an unexpected problem with my plecostomus. They have been living and growing together for almost 2 years now, the pleco had just reached around 9 inches long, my turtle is maybe 6 inches. The pleco had grown very brave, and unfortunately almost everything the turtle eats, the pleco eats and vice versa. The pleco started forcefully stealing food right out of my turtles mouth. Jello shots, vegetables of any kind, algae wafers (intended for pleco, but turtle likes them)...everything became a game between the two of them. What it came down to was the pleco acting overly aggressive toward my turtle! I started having terrible thoughts of my pleco sucking onto my turtle and injuring him. The pleco is able to rasp layers of raw potato, very strong. Especially since my turtle has been doing a lot of fanning lately, I was worried the pleco might injure him boy parts since he was constantly following my turtle around...
Ok so anyway that's my long winded warning that even if your turtle is seemingly able to live with fish, a pleco may not be a good choice. I wanted to put this or there because I have posted before about my "success" at keeping a pleco and turtle together.
A couple other random things, plecos generally don't eat algae. You have to feed them zuchinni, very messy. They pooop pooop poop all the time. I'm talking a lot of poo. Don't ever get a plecostomus if you are looking for a clean up crew... And apparently can become aggressive!
