On Sunday I was at a mall where there was a Pet Lovers' Centre branch. I begged my parents to buy me the basking lamp, for I knew far too well the consequences of not having one.
My parents were furious. "Paying for something that costs about 20 times more than the cost of the turtle! Even if it dies, get a new one then!"
I was utterly shocked by the attitude my parents had against animals.
My father tried to talk me out of it. "I can build one myself. 'Sides, it is really hot. Your turtles may overheat and die."
"Use the balcony to let them have natural sun." Mom said, but the balcony has been converted into my sister's room.
I am extremely disappointed. Even though I offered to return the money to them bit by bit (I don't have a job, so I would rely on my savings), my parents refused. "I do not allow you to spend that much money on a worthless creature!" They say.
Ugh! :/ Why are they so against turtles? I can't rely on sunlight as it is the rainy season now. :/

You'll just have to be more resourceful. An incandescent lamp can serve as a basking lamp. Remind your parents that your turtle can be with you for the next few decades.

Try and do random chores for your parents and neighbors and start a turtle fund :) Maybe if you wrote up a report about turtle health and caring it would help them see how much you care?

@Steve: Hm. Incandescent bulbs/lamps, you say? I'm a terrible novice at hardware stuff - can the bulbs fit into any lamp stand, or does it have to be of the same brand, etc?
@Happycamper: Good idea! :D I am currently trying to make a RES mini info guide to inform people about this lovely species.

It's all standard stuff. Just make sure if you use a 75watt bulb, the fixture can handle a 75watt or greater bulb. It should have a label indicating that.
