Umm don't they eat turtles in other countries? Maybe they weren't trying to save it maybe they catching it for food...

They even eat turtles in THIS country. That's how I came about my third turtle which is a Pond. A lady goes to the river and catches them every day for turtle soup. I'm sure she's not the only one.

I believe there are only 3 or 4 of these guys left. They are considered Sacred so don't worry about that.
