My RES are around 3-5yrs old and ive noticed the one gets in front of the other and flicks his claws.My question is if the female has eggs will she lay them in the water,if so what should I do with them.Im not sure if they will hatch in the water or the have to be on land

Most likely if you dont have a nesting site she will lay the eggs in the water. If that is the case if the eggs are in the water for more then an hour the eggs are dead the absorbs to much water and drowns it. Either way though really shouldnt try and hatch the eggs. Res are overpopulated to begin with. So if she does lay eggs it is just best to throw them out.

Freeze them first before throwing them out. You don't want them hatching in the garbage bag.

Im 100% sure if you put them in a garbage bag they wont hatch lol. As soon as egg is turned in wrong direction from point of settling the turtle is dead or just break the eggs open right away. You really dont need to waste the time freezing the eggs.

Its something that most likely will never happen, but it have heard it before. Better safe than sorry.

RES don't lay eggs in the water in the wild, and should be given other options in captivity. Some females when faced with laying eggs in the water simply won't. Instead they will retain the eggs and become egg bound. The eggs can become brittle and break inside the female. If this happens it can cause death to your turtle. Watching for signs of desperation to get out of the tank can be a clue. Some people provide nesting areas outside, or in containers, some even have these containers attached to their tanks. Depends on how handy you are, etc.
