I think its about time to get another res

but ofc i needed to come get some words of wisdom from my favourite site ;D!!

my res is ALMOST 4 inches..is this too big for a hatchling?

Should i find a res a little more his size? and once i have them together what behaviour should i look out for?

You're certain you have a male? Then you know there is a good chance their will be problems.

If you want to try to introduce a new RES, then it would be good to try with one that's of similar size.

If you don't want issues with fighting, you can try for a separate species with the same tank requirements. Diamondback terrapins (captive bred), maps, and painteds are good examples.

I'm considering adding some new tank mates to the two RES's I currently have. I recently bought a new home and was fortunate enough to get a promotion at work and I've always wanted to expand and upgrade my turtles's habitat. Like I said I have two currently. One 6 inches and the other 4. I had one alone for a while and successfully added the second about a year later. I'd like to ultimately get to 5 total RES's. I'm currently looking for a new tank and will be purchasing new filter equipment in the coming weeks as well. Does anyone think having 5 RES's together would create a problem in the proper environment. I've been doing my homework for nearly 2 years on size and equipment needed to house 5 and I think I'm well prepared to make the jump. I'm hoping, one day in the future to be able to breed my own RES's....but not for a number of years.

ive seen it done in videos, but (my turtle just yawned, so cute ) anyway, u should be prepared for aggression, and maybe have multiple water areas and plenty of extra swimming space. id say go beyond the 10gallon per inch rule just to be safe but its your call. and idk if bredding RES is a good idea. they r already over populated. unless u know what you are going to do with the babies (releasing them into the wild is not a good option)

Diamondback = 200+ Bucks EACH
RES = 5$

What do you consider the proper environement for 5 red eared sliders? I agree that with 5 sliders, you may even want to go beyond the "10 gallons per inch of turtle" rule - so you are clearly looking at a pond of some sort to house a turtle colony of 5.

I just happend to type up a long, rambling, wordy, post on just this subject earlier this morning, based on my recent experiences. I think you should read that post as I think it's actually quite relevant to what you are talking about.

Yeah, so? It's not the only turtle species I suggested. Painteds are almost as cheap as RES. Not to mention, if you go to China Town, they sell them for a lot less.

Just pop some fish in there for tank mates. I don't think its fair to introduce a new turtle into your current turtles home. He lived his life alone so far and is probably super happy about that. No sharing room.. Best basking spot all to himself. Doesn't have to swallow all his food in 3 seconds so another turtle doesn't eat it.


I would love to get a sawback map or painted, but I have to put my selfishness aside and think about homie and how happy he is by himself.

Also depends on how big your tank is. If you do get one anyway... I would suggest going with the same size.

I don't particularly agree with breeding RES, if you look at various rescues you'll see so many of them that have been abandoned or mistreated. I live in NY and there are tons of them here in the wild and this isn't even their native habitat. Anyway, once I have more space (i.e. a house) I'll set up a nice indoor pond and if I decide to get more RES it will be a rescue. That's how I got my Tomi in the first place
