I was wondering what a really good basic type of fish would be to add to my new baby RES. He is only about an inch and a quarter big, so I'm not sure if there is anything that would work. If there is, please advise!
Also, when he does get bigger, what are some good, SAFE, fish to add?
One more....what types of algae eaters are safe in the tank with any size RES?
Thanks! :)

just add a few minos theyre, very cheap and will be a great additive to your tank for a few reasons: 1)they'll clean up all the extra scraps of food on the ground, polishing your tank. 2) if your turtles are bored they could just chase them 3) it'll hone your turtles hunting skills 4) its quite entertaining to watch a chase 5) they are probably to fast for your turtle, so he wont catch them, (your hatchling needs the vitamins, contained in pellets, which have some fish in it, not fish)and if he catches one, great!

I'm not sure what you meant by safe, MOST fish cannot swallow a turtle.
When your turt is bigger (1 year from now), you should try getting, the chinese algae eater, its really fast, and it eats algae.
how big is your tank?
2 res
hunter:small, male (I think), adhd turtle, never goes in shell, almost went down my gutter (but got stuck), ferocious hunter. STATUS= QUESTIONS, VERY HEALTHY (??)
sleepy:largest, female (I think), goes in her shell when picked up, eats ANYTHING.

Hi, and thanks a lot for the great information.
My tank is a 55 gallon tank with just the one little RES in it. I am very leary to get another turtle due to their fast, increasing size from what I hear, but would love to add some variety. I will try the minnows and keep that in mind later for the chinese algae eater.
As far as safe, I was just wanting to make sure that I don't add anything that will terrorize or try and harm the little guy. :)

Im pretty sure some gold fish minnows or guppies won't mess with your turtle. They are also really cheap. Algae eaters will get eaten along with every other fish once your turtle gets bigger but the algae eaters get pretty large which requires a bigger tank.

Also some ghost shrimp are fast like minnows and are cool looking. And a snail to help with the algae.
