Actually, they can live more like 50 years. I'm a man who's going on 40, and I smoke and drink and - well, I don't have much hope for out living my turtles. LOL. They're only about 6 now. They live a long time.
They can grow to be 4" in one year, but that's pretty fast growth (pretty common in Pet Store that follow the 4" rule)
We believe my son's turtle is 2 1/2 years old because she looked young and healthy and was just 4" when we got her, and the pet store said she was 1 year old. Per our research, that sounds about right. He's had her a year and a half, so she's now two and a half and her shell length is 6 1/2"
