Any aquatic turtle setup will be more complicated and expensive, especially in the beginning. Best will be to read the care sheets and see which would be better.

It's really up to you what you prefer. I've had a tortoise before and now own aquatic turtles.
I liked having a tort because they were more fun to feed; you can feed them various vegetables by hand and give them a water bowl and food dish with healthy foods (as well as pet store food). They are also more flexible, in my opinion, habitat wise, because aquatic turtles need an aquarium filled with water. In my opinion, it is easier to house because you can easily set up something outside in your yard (fenced up of course for safety).
With a tort or box you don't need a filter or heater.
Even so, I love my painted turtles (aquatic like red eared sliders).
If you can't decide, maybe you can go to youtube, they have plenty of owner vids that you can watch and enjoy and see if you are more drawn to one or the other.
usually, land turtles cost more to purchase too but it ends up the same considering you don't need a filter or heater for land turtles. Adoption is the bets way to go either way.
