I have had 3 RES, for three years coming this August.

Whenever I reach into my tank to grab him and put him into a separate container to feed him he scurries away to the bottom of the tank so I can't grab him.

I don't understand this because my two other turtles are fine and will always swim up to my hands.

This turtle isn't even the runt of the litter either, the most outgoing one is.

What could be the problem here? Could I be doing something wrong? Is there anyway to fix his shyness?

It's his personality. My turtles are used to me but they don't like being picked up, except for Slyder. Being honest, I would be scared too if something 10x larger then me picked me up.
1 Mississippi Map Turtle 3.25'' (Landslide)
1 Ouachita Map Turtle 4.0'' (Hurricane)
The rest of the turtles have been adopted to good homes. :)

Try hand feeding the shy turtle. I did that with all three of mine, and they like the presence of my hands in the tank very much. Of course this does encourage them to take a nip at your fingers cause they think there is food there.

In any case, my newest turtle, Sadie, has been in my house a little more than a week. She wasn't all that thrilled with us at first. I started hand feeding her five days ago. She doesn't just expect me to hand feed her now, but she will even beg for regular attention, like petting and what not, so, it is can work. My other turtle, Typhoon, is and always will be super shy, but she doesn't hide from my hands anymore like she used to, since now she knows it's a positive thing for her.

There is a chance it might not work, but heck, I haven't a clue what Sadie's upbringing is, and for her to trust me after five days, shows that intelligence and survival instincts rule above all else. She knows that she will survive if my hand gives her food.

i have a RES whose also very very shy. anytime i try to feed him/her he/she swims to the bottom of the tank. A nifty trick i use is. i take my thermometer dip it in the water and all my RES seem to be very intrested and chase the thermometer. then i gently grab him/her.
