I'm starting to wonder if Zipper is female or male. The vet said that it looks like it is a she, but lately her claws seem to be growing rather long. Her tail looks like a female but the claws are making me wonder. Is it possible for a female RES to have long claws?

She is roughly about a year old from what I understand from the pet store. I looked at the picture on the main site to tell whether it's a boy or girl and Zipper's claw length is probably have between what the pictures show.

Well, females could grow slightly long claws but the main difference you want to look for is it's abnormally long. If it's really long then it's a main but I've seen some pictures of females that's grown slightly long nails. The best way to tell is to wait.

My gal Frankie has some pretty wicked, long nails for a female (and man are they sharp!).

I would say if Zipper is about a year old, s/he might still be a bit young to sex. Keep an eye out over the next month, see if her nails grow super long or her tail gets bigger.

Sadie's are a bit bigger than Frankie's but, she's a girl. Flat belly, short nose, cloaca close to shell/short tail, etc. Typically, if a turtle has nails twice the size of Frankie's, it's a male.
