I absolutely agree with Vear on this subject. I myself have a hatchling RES that I bought from a pet store. However, when I bought her she was sick with an RI and on top of that the vet wouldn't treat her because she was too small (1.5'' at the time). Charlotte was sick for weeks and thank goodness she made it through! Thankfully now Charlotte is perfectly healthy but if I had it to do over I would have probably adopted a RES.
There are many young and older turtles out there looking for good homes. As well, turtles that are a bit older have a MUCH better chance of survival and if you're strapped for cash most times if you adopt a turtle they come with food and supplies. This will save you alot of money!
Again, this is just my personal opinion. If you do decide to get a hatchling though be prepared to have to take it to a vet at one time or another because they have a very high chance of getting sick. Good luck in whatever you decide to do
