I am going to soon get a 55 gallon tank, and a male 4 inch red eared slider. It can live in this tank til it is 5.5 inches then. But how long would it take for the RES to grow those 1.5 inches? Because I want it to last until I am 18 at least. I am currently 16.

RES Grow at different rates so no one could really tell you how long he will fit. a 55 gallon could last a male res his whole life if hes a okay size. it just very's but i think no matter what you should stick with a bigger tank.

Yeah, if you have the option to spend about 70-100$ on a turtle, ide def order a baby off the net, its just more enjoyable to know you had a turtle since a baby and watch them grow so much bigger.

go to the site, click on the name of the turtle you want to look at (if you click the name where it says the turtle specie's it will show a big list with pictures of all the turtles in that category btw). You can buy Small, Medium, or Large.

Smalls are babys and usually as small as you can usually get them.

Medium are Yearlings

Large are like 3-5 year old turtles they have had, usually a bit pricey but there mainly for breeders if im correct.

I personally wouldn't buy a baby RES. There are so many turtles that their owners no longer want and just want to get rid of. I'd get one from somebody who couldn't take care of theirs. But that's just my opinion.

I absolutely agree with Vear on this subject. I myself have a hatchling RES that I bought from a pet store. However, when I bought her she was sick with an RI and on top of that the vet wouldn't treat her because she was too small (1.5'' at the time). Charlotte was sick for weeks and thank goodness she made it through! Thankfully now Charlotte is perfectly healthy but if I had it to do over I would have probably adopted a RES.
There are many young and older turtles out there looking for good homes. As well, turtles that are a bit older have a MUCH better chance of survival and if you're strapped for cash most times if you adopt a turtle they come with food and supplies. This will save you alot of money!

Again, this is just my personal opinion. If you do decide to get a hatchling though be prepared to have to take it to a vet at one time or another because they have a very high chance of getting sick. Good luck in whatever you decide to do

I've have my two res since September or October of last year. I have no idea how old they are but they have grown about 1/4 of an inch since I've had them. They are now 4 in. and 4 1/2 in. So mine grew 1/4 inch in about five or six months.
