very pretty.
He's to young to sex at this point, his nails are showing signs of being male but you'll have to wait til he gets a little bigger around 4" shell length to be absolutely certain.

Thank you for the compliments:) I should say, Toku thanks you for the compliments;) I only figure male due to his small size for his age and the front claws seem to be growing. He is a little over 1.5 yrs old. He was hatched in Nov. of 09. So his small size at his age makes me think he is a male, my females grew to 4 inches by the time they were around 2 yrs old. At this rate he will be lucky to be 3 inches by the time he is 2 yrs old.

Yeah Steve, I agree. I figure another 6 months to a year and we will be able to tell. I say a year because of his slow growth rate, my wife is convinced that he is a dwarf Rio Grande, lol. She had a couple RES when she was a young girl, they now reside at the Las Vegas zoo in a pond:) My wife measured him last night and said he was closer to 3 inches than 2.5 inches, so hopefully he can get over the 3 inch mark before I get back. And I hope his front claws have grown.I really want a male for some reason. I can't wait to see what his patterns are gonna look like as a adult! I have never seen a adult Rio Grande yet, so I'm pretty excited to see his. I really love this turtle! He is awesome!

Does anyone here got any variations to the common red ear slider i.e., albinos, pastel, rio grande, etc? Could you show pics. I would love to see a pic of a full grown rio grande or any age for that matter:) Thanks all. And also does anyone know how my Rio's pattern compare to other Rio's? Thanks in advance!

Sorry, no fone for me just the internet. How old is yours? And do you know his size? It is crazy but I have never seen a full size Rio except a crappy pic on the web.

so what is the average growth rate for a male slider is it slower than a female? How long does it take to reach maturity?

Males are smaller so it would appear they have slower growth. Their size is more of an indication of maturity than age.
