I recently saved this little guy, Squirtle. He's 5" and from what I can tell, male.

How is his shell looking?

the pictures aren't very clear. The nails look rather short though, if the turtle really is 5'' then it's probably a female. Can you take pics of the front and back nails and of the tail?

Where did you save it from?

Sorry if these ones aren't too clear either. You were guessing he was male based off these pics in my other thread. ;)

The shells 4 1/2".

I'm most concerned about his/her shell though.

An old lady had it in a pond in her backyard. Then she didn't want it so she was going to kill it. Then my aunt took it, and I took it from her. He wasn't being taken care of very well at all. :(

Regardless of the length of the claws, that tail is a sure giveaway. Looks to be MALE to me. :D

The shell looks like it just needs a good shed. A good amount of basking, varied diet, and UV light should fix that. It's just a matter of time

Looks like it's 50% male and 50% female.
Either way, sex doesn't really matter. Just as long as he's happy and cared for. :3

I was figuring he might need to shed but I wasn't sure what a "need-to-shed" shell looked like. I heard I should feed him blueberries/sweet potatoes to help this process, is that true? Also, how often should I feed him this, because they are normally a treat?

Varied diet might be hard because he doesn't like lettuce. I've been trying other greens but no go. I actually made jello shots with only different types of lettuce and he ate that, though. And he LOVES blueberries. On top of the UV bulb over his tank, I also bring him outside everyday for an hour for some good, real sun. ;)

Sounds like the diet you're offering is great. It should be okay to offer the treats once a week or two as long as every other part of his diet is normal. The sunlight should help quite a bit though!

And Chris is right, definitely a boy tail, his claws might have been warn down on rocks in the pond or something.
