The markings on Sheldon's back look a lot like the markings on the back of a male cumberland slider. I wonder if that is because your turtle is in fact a male, or is just the result of genetics being related to the gender of the parents. Maybe Sheldon's dad was a cumberland, and the mom an red ear. The tail is very short though... If I know how big Sheldon is, and see close up pictures of the cloaca, I could probably guess the gender.
